There’s nothing worse than getting caught out by a flat cell phone battery. Although Apple’s newer phones have more juice than their predecessors, our iPhone’s battery life is still just not cutting it. We’ve compiled the best phone hacks for preserving your iPhone XR battery life, so get ready and take note – here’s how to fix your battery woes!

Low Power Mode

It’s a no-brainer, really. Turning on Low Power Mode will help your iPhone’s battery life massively. This handy setting turns on when your phone hits 20% or less. You can simply go into Settings > Battery and move the toggle to switch to turn Low Power Mode on; however, you can only enable Low Power Mode if your battery is below 80%.

Hey Siri

The Hey Siri feature has been the source of much debate, as having it switched on gives your phone permission to constantly listen out for you to so say the magic words “Hey Siri”. When Low Power Mode is enabled, one of the first things it does is disable the Hey Siri function, so we can assume that Siri isn’t helping our battery life out.

Notifications

Having your screen flash on every time you get a notification or alert is extremely power-consuming. To save your iPhone’s battery life, and your sanity, try turning off your notifications. You can choose to silence notifications from specific apps or turn them off entirely, it’s your choice.

Bluetooth, Airdrop, and Wi-Fi

Bluetooth, Airdrop and Wi-Fi are constantly looking to connect to nearby devices, so can cost your iPhone’s battery life a fair amount of power. Unless it’s an absolute must, it will help in the long-run to turn these off. Even if you can’t turn off all of these, just turning off one could help your smartphone battery last longer during the day. To turn off Airdrop, go to Settings > General > Airdrop > Receiving off.

Background App Refresh

You’d think that once you close an app, that would be the end, right? Wrong. When you close an iOS app, it will keep on running in the background in a sort of suspended state. Apps that are in this suspended state are still fully able to look for updates and content, draining your iPhone XR battery life in the process. To make sure this pesky battery-wasting setting is turned off, go into Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

This battery-saving phone hack is quite obscure; you wouldn’t think to turn your vibrate off to save your iPhone’s battery, but it really does help! Go into Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn both of your vibrate options off.

Location Services

This is a great option if you don’t need location services running in the background sucking up your iPhone’s battery life. While helpful when using apps like Google Maps, those GPS pings can really affect your cell phone battery. To turn off your location services, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

iCloud

There are a few people out there that don’t understand or even know if their iCloud is on, so it’s fair to say some don’t know how to turn it off either. iCloud uses a fair bit of data and power, so turning off this storage software could make that last bit of juice last longer. Tap Settings > your Apple ID > iCloud and turn everything off you don’t need.
